The Limits of Betting
Not everyone who plays poker has a deep pocket. Of course, poker ain't what it is without the betting. For most players, the game is more of a recreational activity rather than a means to earn cash. The cash is just the added bonus. So to avoid spending too much or betting too high, limits are set.
Limits to bets give the game a certain pace. Limits are there so that the game wouldn't finish right away. Limits are set as well to make sure that the game doesn't last too long. The players involved in the game often discuss first the rules of the poker game they are about to have. Along with these rules, the players talk about the limits for the bets to be made.
Once limits have been agreed upon, these are unalterable in the course of the game. They should be followed strictly by all the players. There are several popular limits to the game of poker.
Fixed limit. A game with a fixed limit is when no one can bet or raise more than a certain number of chips. It can be two chips, four chips or even ten chips for the more competitive. In draw poker, the fixed limit could be two chips before the draw. Usually, this increase after the draw to four or as to what the players have decided.
Pot limit. The size of the pot determines how high a player could raise in a round of the game. For example, if at the start of the game there are six chips in the pot, the first bettor may raise up to six chips. If there are six chips, then the first bettor puts in four chips in the pot so the next player who would like to call puts in four chips as well. The next player who wishes to raise should count the six chips, the four chips by the first bettor and the four chips of the player who called. Thus, to raise the bet, he or she could raise as high as fourteen chips. Most of the time, when the pot limit is used, the players usually agree upon the maximum number of chips in a pot.
Table stakes. This type of limit is based on the number of chips a player has in his stack. A player with ten chips can only bet his ten chips. A player with twenty chips can only bet his twenty chips and nothing more. A player with ten chips can also call a bet only to the full extent of his ten chips. Players cannot reduce the number of his chips during the game. However, players can add to their stack before the cards are the dealt for the next round.
In some of the more adventurous poker games, players employ a no limit, sky's the limit or freezeout type of betting limit. Anything goes in this type of game. However, rarely is this limit set because of well, practical reasons.
Creating betting limits in a game of poker sets the pace. It also adds a sense of control so that things wouldn't get out of hand. Poker and betting is pretty addictive so putting a limit to it makes the game friendly and practical.
