What is the European Gaming and Betting Association?
The issue of the legality of online gambling has been making waves across the globe. Countries have taken different stance when it comes to virtual gambling. There are countries that have categorically banned this form of gambling while some countries have tried to regulate the same. Admittedly, many of these countries are still unsure about the wisdom of regulating online gambling as opposed to banning it altogether. This is especially true in Europe where countries are not only concerned about their own rules but also of the European Union rules as well. It is not surprising, therefore, that the European Gaming and Betting Association or the EGBA was created.
An Introduction to the EGBA
The European Gaming and Betting Association is an organization that was set up by the European casino and gaming operators in order to protect the interest of European online gamblers. This is actually a non-profit organization; however, the members regard EGBA seriously because of their financial vested interest on online gambling. Indeed, virtual gambling provides a major source of revenue for these gaming operators.
What is EGBA's View on Online Gambling?
As expected, European Gaming and Betting Association have taken a positive stance on online gambling. They insist that Article 49 if the European Union treaty supports online gambling. They believe that this form of gambling constitute free market exchange and is protected by the treaty. EGBA does not impose acceptance of online gambling upon European countries especially those that have banned this form of gambling. Their mission is to eradicate discrimination against private online gaming operations by countries or states that allow government-sponsored online gaming companies within their jurisdictions.
Implementation of EGBA's Mission
Implementing the mission of European Gaming and Betting Association is not easy. Many countries have passed laws banning privately-owned online gaming companies while allowing state-sponsored operations. The EGBA has a lot to contend and deal with. It has received considerable attention for its support on investigations conducted in several European countries like Germany and Sweden. These countries have passed allegedly discriminatory anti-gambling laws. Apparently, as long as these kinds of laws are passed, the EGBA will continue to protect equal opportunities for both state-sponsored and private gaming operations.
The issue of online gambling is indeed vague. There are countries that have passed laws banning online gambling while some countries' laws have remained ambiguous. There are countries that have adopted discriminatory measures against online gambling. Fortunately, for Europe, players and operators are protected by the European Gaming and Betting Association. The EGBA will continue to ensure that players and operators are all given equal opportunity when it comes to online gambling.
